Jay Z says 'Jesus Can't Save You' On His New Album, What Are You Doin Everyday To Disprove This Statement

I got a text message this morning at 7:58 am from my man M.A.J.O.R.S. an anointed brother who reps the King on the mic to the fullest and walks it like he talks it... Any I got this text that read. "A quote from Jay-Z, Blueprint 3 album, Song: Empire State of Mind, 'Jesus Cant save You, life Starts When the Church Ends.' What are you doing everyday to disprove this quiote?"

Now let me say a few things here, and all may not agree but I want to get a few things off my chest. I have to admit I was busy doin what God called me to do that I hadn't heard the song yet. And had the text come from a few others in the Christian hip-hop game I may not have taken it as seriously, because of their views on things. but this is a brother I know to be filled with the Spirit and who takes it to the street and really lives like many of us claim we do.

But unlike most people, even when a reliable person like M.A.J.O.R.S. shares something like this, instead of running with it we first must look into it for ourselves before we run with it. So I looked up the lyrics to the song. Now let me say Im an a diehard New Yorker who lived that Empire State of Mind to the fullest, I am a confessed hip-hop junkie and someone who feels Jay Z carried New York on his back and held it down for us when Biggie died, even though I questioned a lyrics or too, I basically rode with Jigga.

Now I painted that picture so when I say the next part you understand who its comin from not someone that finds conspiracy theories in ever lyrcis and demonic spirits in every rapper. Im not saying it not okay to listen to secular music, Im not saying all hip-hop is bad, and not goin to jump on the band wagon that one line by one artists makes the whole genre evil...I do say be careful what you allow your ears to hear and your eyes to see.

But hear me on this. If we call ourselves a Child of God, we must step up when anyone, even an artist we feel, says anything negative against our Lord. We can no longer just sit back and let these lyrics go unchecked as our children and those who don't have a relationship with the King digest this message.

Lights is blinding, girls need blinders
so they can step out of bounds quick,
the side lines is blind with casualties, who sipping life casually,
then gradually become worse,
don’t bite the apple Eve,
caught up in the in crowd,
now your in-style,
and in the winter gets cold en vogue with your skin out,
the city of sin is a pity on a whim,
good girls gone bad, the cities filled with them,
Mommy took a bus trip and now she got her bust out,
everybody ride her, just like a bus route,
Hail Mary to the city your a Virgin,
and Jesus can’t save you life starts when the church ends,
came here for school, graduated to the high life,
ball players, rap stars, addicted to the limelight,
MDMA got you feeling like a champion,
the city never sleeps better slip you a Ambien
[Chorus]
In New York,
Concrete jungle where dreams are made of,
Theres nothing you can’t do,
Now you’re in New York,
these streets will make you feel brand new,
the lights will inspire you
lets here it for New York, New York, New York...
- Empire State Of Mind- Jay Z featuring Alicia Keys

Nor can we no longer sit back and complain to each other about the evils in hip-hop, pop culture, television, movies and the media and not go out equally as strong with the message of the Good News of our God, of our Savior. We can no longer sit back and wait for others to do something about it. So I agree with my brother M.A.J.O.R.S.This is not a slam Jay Z post but a battle cry to all those who call themselves Children Of God to go out in the streets and teach the truth. We are sitting back for far too long waiting on our preachers to save the world, when the great commision orders all of ua to take Gods Word to the streets.

So after this lengthy rant I leave you with this thoughtits one thing to hear something and look the other way, not play it, not buy it, not support it but as M.A.J.O.R.S. asked in his text this morning What are you doing everyday to disprove this quiote?" I add not just this quote but everything that speaks again our Savior. We must re-present Christ to the world, because many dont know Him and have only heard statements like the one in this song, so long go unchallenge that, that is what they believe. The truth is there is no situation where Christ can't save you, if you come to Him, honestly, humbly and ask for forgivenness for yoru sins. he died on the Cross and paid the price for sin which is death, so we could have a intimate relationship with HIM and eternal life.

Are you out in the streets, the highways and the biways, the hood and other places where healing it needed. Are you taking the Good News to the lost and those who dont have a relationship with Christ. Are you introducing your friends who dont believe to Christ?
Well if the answer is no, you can no longer sit back and complain that Jay Z or anyone else said something about Christ, if you are not out there teaching the truth.I apologize for the rant, you know ya boy got a big mouth but I felt very passionate about this and had to share it and want to hear from everyone. Each and everyone of you whether you beleive what I believe or not
I want to hear from everyone

I just finished watching the clips from the MTV VMA awards show and I heard the line. At first I thought "He didn't just say that" so I searched and found the lyrics. Jay-Z doesn’t need to believe what I believe, but he has no right to attack it. And I don't need to fill my mind with the D'evils as Jay-Z calls it.

I understand what J-z meant. When we are blinded by the understandings of our parents and grand parents. We fail to seek the truth but just ride along with the way they understand Jesus. In Mathew jesus says u are saved by your faith. He never said he healed anyone; He said the same power he has God also gave to u. When he said u must go through him. he meant his word.. you become free by reading mathew..yee all are jesus. Mathew is plain and simple. You are powerful. No jesus cant save you ;but by the way u understand his word when he teaches. you shall do greater things. Ministers and preachers dare to explain this. to there congregation for fear of loosing them or because they are not seekers. I command Jay-z for teaching what Jesus taught in mathew and through out the bible.

Jay-zs comment on life starts when the church ends..simply put. Church is not at all what God had in mind. I have been in church most of my life and the same people who struggled with everything from finances to health when I was a child are in the same boat..We need to focus on what jesus says and demand the preachers to explain it when jesus speaks of us healing our self through faith.. Demand they study and stop beating around the bush. And if they cant answer then find another church.. who teaches what jesus taught.Jesus never said we are weak but he is strong. But we sing it all day long.Preachers you need to study and get it right.. you hurting alot of people with your miss understanding.

@yholanda: As a former Jay-Z diehard myself, I cannot give your explanation any credence. Any man that writes a song called Lucifer, where he mocks believers (and PLEASE explain these lyrics for me, because obviously it's OK to mock the Lord when things don't go our way in the hood, right?...), cannot be explained away, and I'm tired of people covering for this sick man. Jay-Z HIMSELF said that he's never opened a Bible. So for you to sit here and quote scriptures on Jay-Z's behalf is just incredulous to me.

What Jay-z is saying "Hail Mary to the city you're a virgin" Mary was a Virgin, and he's referring to a woman coming to NY as a virgin, she's never experienced the life before. "And Jesus can't save you life starts when the church ends" The Jesus can't save you part is saying, regardless of what religion you are, LIFE STARTS WHEN THE CHURCH ENDS...you get out of church, and life starts, for example work, bills, school...whatever. And when you get a break that leads to the NY night life, partying, drinking, and sex. It's kind of sophisticated but it makes a lot of sense.

In other words you wanna be a Christian (little Christ) and yet agree with teaching people how not to follow Christ as litlle "Christs". You need to check yourself if this statement doesn't rub u wrong bottom line. Jayz stay in your lane and stop helping satan to convince souls from trusting Jesus' saving grace.....Dear World please know that Jesus Saves!!!!!!

I find this statement from Jay Z to be quite a paradox since the song as a whole feels very God inspired.

The first scripture that came to my mind when I heard it was:

Hebrews 11:10 For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.

that city IS Jesus... and its streets ARE the church. Streets that make you feel brand new, whose lights inspire you. Truly a place where dreams come true.

The song is very powerful. I find Jay Z's anti-church lyrics no stranger than Acts 7:58 where Saul was found consenting unto Stephens death.

Jay Z is certainly not the enemy, in fact in the days to come He might be one of Christs most outspoken apostles. Our God is Sovereign and he rules supreme.

One thing is also true is that he loves people New York more than Jay Z and Alica can even imagine.

dearest yholanda,
Please read Colossians 2. Our new life comes only in our acceptance of Christ as our Lord. There is no power in me or any other believer that does not come from our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. To know God we must accept Christ and His role in our lives. I encourage you to seek truth. Not with the intent of defending your views, but with the whole-hearted intent of obtaining truth, which will undoubtedly be found in Christ, never in any person on this earth. If we don't point back to Christ then we are only misleading those who follow.

all jay z is saying is that life in new york, or any city is ruff growing up, and unfortinately jesus cannot always save you, did jesus save half of the people who died in the 9/11 attacks? NO

god left the decisions of our lives with us.

Jay Z is CORRECT CORRECT CORRECT...Need I say it again? Church is the most corrupt business ever. You got these fucking priests and preachers molesting children in the fucking CHURCH. Church is uppose to be a sanctuary. Jesus didn't save those children from being molested, and yet these motherfucking priests and preachers think they have the right to be all holy and shit. People barely making it and making these preachers rich. Preachers got jets, nice rides, and people that work hard everyday, just trying to make sure they give their money to the church. That makes no sense. Jesus cannot save you, life starts when the church ends. The church has ended. Church is not anything at all that it is suppose to be. I believe in Jesus, yes I do..but I think that people are hypocrites and I think most of these preachers are crooks. How can Jesus be OK with how these churches are operating? It is so fucked up that religion is so twisted. People are big on saying they christian, but sill go out and commit sins..fuck if you wanna be technical..there are HOMO fucking preacher. If you read the bible, Gay people are gonna go to hell. If you are a preacher, you are not suppose to lust..and most of them do! We are all fucking sinners...just be REAL about your shit. Don't try to cover it up like I'm christian..I wear christians can be so damn hypocritical.

It does not matter how you try to twist it.... Jesus is God, 100% man and 100% God. Christ died for the sins of all mankind, past present and future. Before the foundation of the world Christ was purposed to died for the world to reconcile man back to God for those the believed on Him (Revelation 13:8). To say the Jesus can't save you regardless of how much you have sinned is a slap in God's face and to laugh at His power. Point blank! the only people that cannot be saved by Christ is Satan and his demons! So now ask yourself is Jay-Z calling all of us Devils? Please stop being stupid because you want to be of the world when God has called the Christians to be out of the world. If you cannot stand up for the God you put on the cross than please remove "i'm a christian" from your speech. if your heart does not belong to God then go home and stop faking it. I thought about doing this as soft as possible but the comments I read just did it. even after reading the blog you still don't get it. the fact that he said the GOD can't save you no matter what. Its like saying no matter what water can't put out fire...

I dont care what he meant, what other meaning he might have had behind that, you DONT say that. Thats not even something you joke about. Christians shouldnt take that lightly. All i can hear from that song is the devil speaking. Taunting folks about how lost they are and celebrating his progress in propagating sin in the world. Common guys, there is no explanation for that line. The Bible says 'Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy and i will give you rest'. Nobody is beyond redemption. That includes Jay Z himself. I am a lil worried that the entire world loves this song. Its very ironic, dancing to a song that clearly tell's them 'your souls are lost and therez no redemption'. Jay Z is obviously doing the devil's work!

It says what it says. A true follower of Christ knows that the only life we have is a life that we live glorifying God everyday even after we walk out of Church. The church does not end! Jay z is saying Jesus cant save you. He can save anyone even a Hitler. Our life should model Jesus Christ that is church, a continual repentance of sins in our life.. The church never ends. This statement that Jesus cant save and that life starts when the church ends. This is a statement of unbelief in the word of God.

Jesus saves all who ask for him, and to the dude who said there are preachers sleeping with kids, who are you to judge, you are making an excuse for your own sin!! you have a repabated mind, and you need prayer, so in the name of Jesus, we pray for wisdom for you

Also he makes a mockery of the Lord's name, Jahovah. There is nothing good about jay-z, he's just using his rap skills for evil.

I stumbled upon this blog by accident... I want to start off by saying that the blog and the responses are great, it is always good to read about the differences in our beliefs and differences in our levels of understanding. I want to put my "2 cents" in too: the jay-z lyrics are whatever you allow them to be... if you allow them to teach you, then they will be your teacher. If you do not take offense to them, then they will roll right off your back. I heard the song over 25 times on the radio before that line registered in my mind... And I am not slow or hard of hearing. I am just not looking for a reason to complain. My faith is in the sovereignty of the Most High God... I would like to encourage all who read this; what Jay-z has recorded is perfectly fine. Because Jesus Christ is Lord no matter what anyone says. Christ doesn't need anyone to defend him... He didn't ask us to be fighters... He asked us to be lovers (see John 13:35). Also When Peter cut off the guard's ear in the Garden of Gethsemane Christ admonished Peter for his actions, then healed the man who lost his ear. The point is all power belongs to Him: not us.
I reject the comments that says that Jay-Z's lyrics are a "slap" in the face of God or Christ and are somehow laughing at his power. God's power is ABSOLUTE!!! Jay-Z couldn't slap God in the face if he wanted to... Repeat: he doesn't NEED you to defend Him... He WANTS you to be mindful for your surroundings and not fall victim to self-righteousness. To maintain our faith we don't have to get all "bent out of shape" just because someone says something we don't like about Jesus Christ. To maintain our faith is to truly understand from where it comes. To stand up for Christ is to keep his commands which include loving our neighbor as ourselves. Paul teaches us to restore our brother gently lest we fall into temptation (Gal 6:1), I wonder how many of our statements can be considered "gentle" or "meek?" or for the restoration of a brother. More importantly how many of our statements reflect our own spiritual maturity; and by those same statements we judge what Jay-Z meant when he wrote those lyrics as if we were there in his head with him. We need to keep our eye on Christ then we wouldn't have desire or energy to criticize someone else for what WE consider offensive. However, I agree that we need to be mindful of what we expose ourselves to. Just my thoughts.... stay ready!

Lets not judge before we READ... everyone deserves a fair trial in America and we should try to understand and piece together what he is saying before we judge him.
Im not the judge.. you are.. im just going to try to piece it together if i can. If you disagree with anything just say something you know. Anyhow here we go...

Jesus is mentioned twice in the song, the first being:
"if Jesus is paying Lebron, im paying Dwayne Wade"
That sounds like a comparison to himself an Jesus. If its intended to make himself appear higher than jesus then he's in the wrong. And that wouldnt help him defend his later statement either.

the second you all know, so i'll go straight into talking about the ENTIRE VERSE, and not one line of it.

He talks about the city of sin and refers it to New York. Then backs his statement by talking about a virgin woman (which leads to his comment about the virgin Mary) losing her virginity when she goes into the city.

He connects this with Eve biting the apple as he says a few lines before. And the blinding lights piece I guess means that the city is blinding you with all its lights and fame, and distracts you into "biting the apple" like Eve did, or committing yourself to sin like both Eve and the unnamed bus woman did.

"dont get caught up in the crowd" is again saying that dont go getting mixed up with the "flow" and just because they do it doesnt mean you should.
Sounds like he's supporting christianity right? I thought so at first, but it doesnt add up with what he's saying...

He supports NY City but calls it a sin city, then makes these warnings to "future Eve's" out there (or at least thats how I read it, even if that wasnt his intention (probably wasnt)). But calling NY city a sin city isnt a compliment... but the song chorus proves that the song is pro NYC. So hes not really warning Eve it seems... but possibly saying how sin is more powerful than Jesus? Since it was able to draw Eve to sin, as well as the bus girl. And if that is what he was saying, then im not suprised at people taking offense... Even if he's right about sin luring people away from god... (though its not God's power thats being challenged, it's ours, so sin is strong and can overcome any of us if we stray too far from God's teachings)

BUT then again none of the lyrics really mesh well... maybe he's rambling and Jesus was on his mind so he added him in there to quietly spread some of his own personal opinions about Christ and the church. But who knows, either way life will go on, and if he is attacking Christ then it's not a suprise since if you read your Bible you'll know that the "later days" will be very anti-Christ. (not that we should let it go unchallenged)

I am a believer in Jesus Christ and im saved through faith.

Im not judging him, I wont judge him since ive sinned and for me to judge his sins and "cast the first stone" (bible) would be like saying my sins are less than his. So i wont. But I will observe and form an opinion of what he said.

"Judge not lest ye be judged" (which in context to the rest of the verses surrounding means in a nutshell: Do not judge unfairly, but judge others as you would be judged by God, Justly)

peace out

You have to understand what Jay Z meant. Most Christians won't understand it because instead of truly following Christ, most churches just follow the man-made line of "Accept Jesus as your personal savior and be saved," which is utterly ridiculous.

Jesus never said anything about being a savior, he never said you have to accept him. These were things people accredited to Christ after he died. And the early church latched onto these sayings and ideas to coerce people to doing want they wanted.

Jesus was against corruption in the Church and unfortunately that is what BIG BUSINESS CHRISTIANITY has become.

Instead of following the words of Christ, seeking enlightenment of the spirit within each of us, helping our fellow man, we are constantly bashed over the head with "ACCEPT JESUS AND YOU CAN DO WHATEVER YOU WANT."

Well that's not what Jesus taught. Paul, although he had good intentions in spreading the word of Christ, really messed up his message.

Jay Z is just telling it like it is. If you want to be a Christian read what Jesus taught, said, and did and stop the "all you have to do is believe in him" nonsense.

I think he's saying that what people call "real life" (broken relationships, financial difficulties) start as soon as you exit Church. Perhaps you have to take the bus, walk a long distance etc, go home to empty cupboards, abuse, whatever, "the worries of this life" as our Jesus put it.

After we get the message(s) from church, people still have to go and deal with the aforementioned. In the parable of the sower, Christ said, "the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it [Gospel], making it unfruitful." It's not the Gospel that is unfruitful (i.e. can't deal with "real life") it's the condition of our hearts and what we focus on. Jesus said to cast our cares upon him for his yoke is light.

Clearly Jay-Z doesn't have a clue about the power of the Gospel which has saved countless people from situations he can't even fathom. We can only pray he comes to repentance before it's too late. His bank roll and fame won't do him much good on the other side.

My 2 cents, not put as clearly as I should but I'm working on something else.

Its obvious that a clear line its being drawn in the sand. Those who serve and fear the true and living God and those who don't. I am in no way judging anyone, this is not my job. However, the question posed is how could a God fearing Christian.. even find an excuse for someone saying... " Jesus can't save you". Jesus is the only one who can save us.. He is the Saviour.. the lamb that was slain and the King of all Kings

Is Jay z that precious? that he has to be idolized in that way. These lyrics didn't discredit him.. He exposed his beliefs a long time ago in song.

The main point I have to bring out is... we all need to be careful what we listen to. Why feed your mind with junk?? I fall into that trap sometimes and its obviously reflected in my moods. It's no surprise that people are defending a man that said Jesus can't save you

Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter. Isaiah 5:20

May God help us all

Ok first of all, to anonymous a couple posts ago. It's not "If jesus is payin Lebron..." It's "if Jeezy's payin Lebron, I'm payin Dwayne Wade." That lyric is in reference to a Young Jeezy song in which he claims to pay "Lebron"(#23) for a kilo of a certain drug, to which Jay Z is claiming if Jeezy's payin Lebron, $23,000, then he's payin Dwayne Wade, $3,000. Which leads me to believe you don't listen or research what you are writing about, you are just looking for an excuse to complain.

Granted, everybody is entitle to their opinion, but if you truly believe that Jay Z was speaking literally, saying that Jesus can't save you and you aren't truly 'living' until you ditch the church, then I believe you are being very ignorant. Even as big as Jay Z is he doesn't need or want that type of publicity. The line is so much deeper than people are giving him credit for. I think at this point it's time to get over it, if something like this shakes your faith everytime you hear it then it wasn't that firm to begin with. It's ok to question and think about your faith, not just blindly follow it. "All things are impermanent, strive on with awareness." Buddha

Hey, people just be mindful to everything you read, watch and listen to I find myself study all subject matter in video games, movies and music lyrics. Most importantly being I always felt a little uneasy with someone calling themselves J.Hova meaning God MC. Referring to Jehovah gods true first name. Its just that lyrics if that's how he feels about jesus and god so be it or it could be he's views on the city of New York or his religious view who knows who cares. Stay strong in your faith and don't come into temptations that are worldy. Study the bible and build a strong faith with your brothers and sisters make the meetings and most importantly keep the faith for when god's resurrections you can be remembered.

Jay z is sayin rubbish by that statement because no other person can save except Jesus Christ who died for all our sins, the earlier all of us believe the better for us because He is coming very soon, that is to say that RAPTURE is about to take place
